We are sure that for anyone reading our blog, they will be no stranger to "The Rainbow Bridge" and that it needs no explanation.
The Housekeeper has had a damm good cry this evening and hugged the Abyssinians even tighter on reading news on the BBC website about the terrible news of a cattery in Staffordshire in the UK loosing 20 animals in a fire today.
Words simply cannot descibe how the cattery owners and individual pet owners must be feeling

Hammock-Ville
Anyone would thing these dark November mornings and evenings were for nothing but snoozing ..
If you had seen The Housekeeper and Jasper curled up in a throw on the settee at 18:00 yesterday, then you have had to agree!
If you had seen The Housekeeper in bed this morning with AMBER under the bedclothes having a proper cuddle, you would have definitely agreed!!!

Confused.cat
The Housekeeper has been busy in the kitchen today ...
It's her Father's 88th Birthday and her Aunt's 80th Birthday within the space of a week, so there is a family "do" tomorrow at The Housekeeper's parents house. On the teatime menu is The Housekeeper's homemade smoked mackerel pate and also a very large four layer carrot cake for pudding which will double as a Birthday cake.
The Housekeeper had a committee meeting on Tuesday evening so was able to test the carrot cake recipe out in advance and all agreed it was good enough to make again.
With the pungent smell that only smoked mackerel can make to the house, clothes and hands, The Housekeeper expected that she would have four furry friends supervising the making of the pate this morning, but it wasn't to be. However just as she was finishing the de-boning process everyone arrived in the kitchen so The Housekeeper thought that she had better be kind and offer fishy titbits.
It turns out that three out of four cats DON'T like mackerel.
In the dim distant, a small black cat called Mouse who lived next door and Parsnip, the first Abyssinian that The Housekeeper owned would have removed human skin for a bit of "Mach Pat". But not these guys, that is except for the Amber cat (still wearing her collar) who devoured every bit she was given and came back for more!) This is the cat who won't eat cat treats of any sort and never begs for human food.
This evening it was time to cover the carrot cake in cream cheese frosting and guess what, the boys both sat at The Housekeeper's feet and cried to be fed??????
It appears that two out of four Abyssinians prefer cheesy cake frosting to fish.
Just to be different!

Stickgate
The Housekeeper's friend, Ian who lives in Somerset came to stay last weekend because The Housekeeper, Mr Housekeeper and he were all off to Shepherds Bush Empire that night to see Big Country in concert.
Now Ian is a generous fellow, and, it has to be said, as very soft touch when it comes to the The Housekeeper's felines. He always leaves the bedroom door ajar and more often than not has a furry companion for the night to keep him warm, however ... this MAY be due to bribery of the food persuasion.
You see, some time ago, Ian came to stay and brought the Abyssinian's some supermarket brand chewy meat and fish stick snacks. The boys LOVE them and almost inhale them rather than eating them. Crystal is a little more demure and demands that hers are broken into pieces. Amber, as per all other treats, just isn't bothered.
It has got to the point where the boys now know Ian's voice when he arrives and don't let him through the front door into the house unless he has been corralled and full bag inspection has been completed for contraband.

Lesson of the Day - Jasper
Lessons, but NO Carols
The Housekeeper hasn't been too busy with work this week, so took time out today to spend some time in the kitchen, in particular to try her hand at making a Christmas Pudding. Its always been a family tradition that The Housekeeper's Mother makes two puddings and The Housekeeper makes two cakes and they do a swap, however with only one dog-eared (am I allowed to use that term on here?!) copy of a 54 year old recipe book and an 81 year old Mother, The Housekeeper took matters into her own hands over New Year and eventually came across a back up copy of the said recipe book on EBay. Hen and teeth spring to mind.
Lesson 1. The Housekeeper
Someone who's been making a recipe, blindfolded for over 50 years smugly telling you what you've done wrong, and laughing, when they are 80 miles away and can't be thumped with the lid of a steamer - Is just a tad annoying, even if she is your Mother.
Lesson 2. The Housekeeper
Leaving the kitchen window open JUST 4 inches to get rid of excessive steam from the kitchen may seem like a good idea, but not when there are Abyssinian's in the house.
Lesson 3. Jasper
Climbing out through a 4 inch gap in a window might seem like a good idea, but not when there's a 7 foot drop on the other side of it, into a very cold, dark conservatory where nobody then knows where you are.
Lesson 4. Jasper
It is harder for an Abyssinian to get 7 foot up in the air and get back through a 4 inch gap in an open window than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.
Lesson 5. Jasper
If in doubt, wail like a banshee. Someone will hear you. Follow this wailing with an impersonation of an Abyssinian bouncing on a trampoline and appearing in the window, briefly, so they can SEE you!
Lesson 6. The Housekeeper
Do not leave a sink full of washing up water when you have finished washing up, especially when it is underneath a window which is not usually open and therefore subject to curiosity. It is possible that the next object you could be washing, unintentionally, could be a cat, trying to get through a small gap in a window.

Lumps and Bumps
The Housekeeper can't quite believe its been nearly two months since she last posted. The 4 Abyssinians and The Housekeeper have survived several weeks of The Housekeeper working silly hours for Christmas Nativity productions and had a very relaxing Christmas and New Year but the start of 2012 hasn't quite started off as we had expected.
The Housekeeper took Amber to the vet this morning as she now has another 4 small red patches flare up on her tummy and under her armpit. Yet more anti-robe tablets and cream for the Amber-girl, this coming week. However, more worrying is the fact that because Amber has some patches of fur missing on her tummy, due to her ongoing skin problems, the vet realised that she has a lump on her tummy.
So, next Monday morning, Our lovely Amber will be going back to the vets for a little op to take away the lump and see whether it is a fatty based lump or something more sinister. The Housekeeper is obviously very worried about her, especially as she is due to be away from Wednesday next week for a few days but the vet assures her that once the anaesthetic has worn off that Amber will be fine.
The Housekeeper is also under the vets at the moment for high blood pressure and is due to go to have it checked on Monday morning after she has dropped Amber off. Think that appointment may need to be changed as the reading is going to be sky high. Oh dear.

Bear With Us
We are SO embarrassed, but The Katnip Lounge did ask, so here she is .... The less purred, the better.
The Four Abyssinians, on the other paw, have had an interesting day with no less than two different Hotpoint engineers visiting to fix both the cooker and the washing machine. The former is awaiting a new thermostat and Mr Hotpoint 1, will be back next Tuesday. The later has been condemned as terminal by Mr Hotpoint 2. We assume that this is due to the financial constraints and 2 hours needed to change the drum as the bearings have gone and not JUST because Jasper tried to trip him up? Oops!
The Housekeeper has been out this evening staring at different models of washing machines, trying to make her mind up on which one to buy. This also means that we are sharing the conservatory with the remains of the show costumes that didn't make it through the washing machine before it waved the white flag.
So now its back to the daily grind for The Housekeeper in the workshop which means more cuddle and play time for us and more blog time for you!
The four are not coping well with the excessive heat at the moment and are looking very sorry for themselves at the moment. They have even dared to sit near the conservatory fan in an effort to keep cool.
Desert cats indeed !!!!

AWOL
The Housekeeper, it has to be said, is getting more than a little tardy when it comes to blog entries these days! She is sorry, it isn't intentional. She is currently on stage again in another show, based on the Eurovision Song Contest and is representing Latvia as a Pirate, Norway as a Dwarf and Israel as a Polar Bear. DONT ASK!!!!
The Four Abyssinians are in their element as a) playmate James is back to stay with us again. He is the 16 year old son of The Housekeeper's school friend from "Home" and is helping backstage with the show.
The other positive is that The Housekeeper isn't working this week so there has been lots of time to both snuggle and play together.
The only down side appears to be The Housekeepers inability to get out of bed in the morning or getting her to respond to the numerous licks and snuggles to get breakfast on the go as she is up late and wide awake because she has been performing and is still on an adrenalin high.
We four are working on this ......

We're Off!
The Housekeeper's are off on holiday this afternoon, heading out of the UK (civil servant strike at the channel tunnel permitting) and are off through France, heading for the Black Forest in Germany for a week in Ralph!, who is The Housekeeper's MGB Roadster. Ralph is older than The Housekeeper! There's actually another 10 cars going on the trip too so we shall be in good company for the week.

The Housekeeper's took Amber to the vets this morning for her check up and he is very very pleased with her progress. He is however concerned that Amber might be stressed about The Housekeepers being away and so has suggested that her collar remain in place until they return. Its upsetting for us but we know its the best solution, really.
The Four Abyssinians are being left at home in the very capable hands of The Housekeeper's parents whilst they are away so you can be sure that there will be plenty of Abyssinian antics to fill you in on when we return.
Everyone has been "helping" with the packing (not that you can fit much in the boot of an MG) and Jasper has been doing his best to go on a road trip too.
We look forward to catching up with you on our return. We've had so little time in the last couple of weeks to visit everyones blogs and we hope that everything will be ok with you all whilst we are away.

Scorchio!
It's been one incredibly hot day, here in the UK, the hottest The Four Abysinians have known and none of them have coped very well.
Both Jasper and Dino looked very miserable today. Jasper was found belly up in his hammock, whereas Dino was just flopping anywhere and everywhere at any given opportunity. Amber, is of course, still under the influence of a collar which can't be much fun in this heat, but it was Crystal who fared the worst.
The Housekeeper turned on the ceiling fan in the conservatory to gave the cats some moving air but forgot that Crystal can't stand the damm thing, so she came into the house to find the boys laying under it, getting their fur ruffled and the muffled wail of the Crystal girl who had taken refuge under the settee in the front room and stayed there most of the day.

Amber's ear, now looks amazing. The Housekeeper let he have a short supervised collar break yesterday in the bathroom and helped Amber have a good spruce up as her head is getting very matted from the cream and drops. As a thank you, Amber slept on the Housekeeper's chest, ALL NIGHT, last night. A wonderful thing. In the nicest possible way, The Housekeeper is hoping that the same won't happen tonight as it is 24 degrees still and very sticky

The Check Up ...
... from the neck up!
The Housekeeper took Amber back to the vets this morning. The Housekeeper was second in line to be seen and was greeted cheerfully by the vet with "so how's my OTHER problem patient, then?!" Oh Dear!
He is very pleased with the way Amber's ear is starting to heal now, so pleased in fact, that he is going to let her wear her fashion accessory for another whole week AND she has another week of anti-robe antibiotic capsules to take.
So it's back we go again, next Thursday morning for another check up.
Everyone else in the Abyssinian household is fine and still being good and very protective of Amber, most of the time, although The Housekeeper did catch Dino "spook" her earlier when she couldn't see him walking up to her. Poor little mite leapt a foot in the air and landed with a very unceremonious clatter on the floor.
The Housekeeper is still cashing in on the lovely Amber cuddles, especially at 6am, in bed under the duvet, when Mr Housekeeper has left for work early and The Housekeeper has had to wake up to wake Amber up so that they can give her, her morning pill before he sets off for the day.
Does anyone have any tips on giving a cat a pill on your own, without help? The Housekeeper has seen the poem/saga of "giving a cat a pill" online several times and it definitely applies in this house. How anyone who lives on their own manages with tablets, we dread to think!

Loooong Day
Amber has been very out of sorts. Completely understandable of course but she just doesn't seem to have any Abyssinian fight in her since her collar was put on. Poor little girl.

She slept in the middle of the bed between The Housekeepers last night and didn't move, all night.
Today she has been very subdued. The Housekeeper gave her three collar breaks of about an hour to give her time to have a wash and have some food and a drink. She has been contained in the conservatory with food and water and then removing the collar, as The Housekeeper knew full well that if she gave her the run of the house without the collar on, that she would disappear behind a bed and stay there! She has been sticking to the one room pretty much anyway, with the exception of litter tray visits as its obviously more comfortable to stay in one place and not get caught on anything.

She has also been as good as gold about The Housekeeper putting her collar back on each time and hasn't struggled once today. She lays across The Housekeeper's knees whilst it is retied. Giving tablets has also been far easier as she cannot swing her head away and spit out the pill with the collar on. Tonight, The Housekeeper has seen her drink water from her bowl with the collar on, which is good as The Housekeeper was worried about her getting dehydrated with limited collar-free time.

The other Abyssinians Have been looking out for her too. The Housekeeper isn't sure whether it was Dino who climbed onto the chair with Amber, or the other way round, but they seem to be quite companionable together.

The picture above shows what Amber's ear looks like today, the following picture was taken in August 2010 and this is what we are trying to avoid happening with the collar in place as it seems to spread and turn very sore, very quickly once she scratches it...... It's heartbreaking.

Collared
The Housekeeper took Amber to the vets this morning for a check up. Sadly, her ear isn't any better. It hasn't dried up as quickly as previous occasions, she is still scratching it and still looks very, very sore.
So, as promised, the vet has now fitted Amber with a collar. He hasn't started on any further treatment at the moment to stop the patches reoccuring, as he wants to get her ear looking less sore and give the skin chance to heal. Sounds sensible, however this does mean yet another consultation fee each time we visit.
The Housekeeper made a point of taking Amber out of her box and holding on to her for a while to have a cuddle and try to settle her down a little, but inevitably, she wriggled free and shot off round the house at an alarming pace, before settling herself in the conservatory.
The other Abyssinians are wary, and Jasper had the hugest fox brush tail That The Housekeeper has ever seen when Amber went running round the house with the collar on. The four of them are now all in the conservatory as The Housekeeper is writing this. They are all chirping to each other, deep in Abyssinian conversation, from which The Housekeeper is excluded. Jasper seems to be leading the conversation.
The Housekeeper has shut all unnecessary doors to rooms, to reduce the running space.
So now we continue the regime of two anti-robe capsules a day as well as cream twice a day and taking the collar off for eating and drinking. It's going to be a long week ahead. Thankfully Mr Housekeeper is home from Germany this evening from a work trip and will be able to help.
Amber has been collared before. An hour after she was home from being spayed, she had pulled all her stitches out and The Housekeeper's had a 40 minute journey to an out of hours emergency vet to get her re-stitched and collared. She spent much of the first day tracking backwards, to it will be interesting to be how she gets on and how long it takes her, or the other Abyssinians, to try to get it off her.
The Housekeeper is feeling very sorry for her. Poor girl.

Time Out
The Housekeeper has been away over the weekend to a family wedding in North Wales and left Mr Housekeeper in charge for three days. Mr Housekeeper still has his sanity! Just!
He, very bravely, decided to try to pill Amber on his own on Saturday. He succeeded, but only after she has accidentally sunk her teeth into him, as she turned to squirm out of his arms and the pill was spat out. Oops. Don't think he'll be trying that one again.
Amber is now doing her level best to avoid the humans at all costs but didn't reckon on The Housekeeper shutting herself and Amber in the conservatory and waiting for Amber to be within reach to pick her up and get a tablet down her. Her ear has now scabbed over, so isn't red raw any more but is still quite nasty looking.
The boys have been making up for lost cuddles with The Housekeeper, however being a self-confessed teapot, she wasn't very happy this afternoon when both boys decided to help themselves to her mug of tea!!!!
Mr Housekeeper is now off to Germany for the rest of the week, so The Housekeeper is looking forward to the extra cuddles but not to Crystal's miserable cat face whilst her "daddy" is missing.

Mr Housekeeper is now off to Germany for the rest of the week, so The Housekeeper is looking forward to the extra cuddles but not to Crystal's miserable cat face whilst her "daddy" is missing.

The Visit
It's been a very exciting and special day for the Four Abyssinians and for The Housekeeper too.
#1 from The Poupounette is in England for a visit at the moment and came over to see us specially this morning.
Everyone was very, very good. Crystal kept her distance but sat "with us" and was eventually persuaded to say hello. Amber made it as far as the conservatory door to be admired and then went back to bed!
And the boys? Well they out performed each other, as usual, and gave #1 a full Jasper and Dino show!
Jasper sat at #1's feet and then climbed onto her lap for a fawn cuddle
The Four Abyssinian's have had a lovely treat bag from The Poupounette gang which they would all like to thank #1 for and send her big purry kisses. The Housekeeper says she will divvy up the contents and take pictures of the Four Abyssinians playing with the toys later on.

In The Housekeeper's own words, its a dark miserable sort of day, there's bugger all on television, the essential housework jobs have been done and its Abyssinian time!

Printer Problems
The Housekeeper is having problems today with her printer, the one she uses for the business. Its stopped working part way through printing a stack of invoices and dispatch notes. After trying all the usual remedies i.e. rebooting the laptop, rebooting the printer, cleaning the printer cable heads, adding more paper to the tray and turning it off and on again!, she has finally given up and got the spare colour printer out of the workshop, which of course, has barely any ink left in it. Joy!
Looks like its a trip to the suppliers this afternoon for a new printer then - and having looked online, none of the new monochrome printers take the same printer cartridge that The Housekeeper has in stock for the monochrome printer. Deep joy!
In frustration, she posted on her Facebook page that it has stopped working and her friend Katy sent her the above link, which of course just meant that The Housekeeper sat in absolute hysterics and forgot completely about the printer issues.
Enjoy - as long as you are not easily offended!

Cat-ch Up
So how are we all doing? Well ...
Crystal is her usual laid back fawn self. Nothing new.
Amber had another trip to the vet last Wednesday for a 6 week long acting steroid injection. Her ear has cleared up beautifully and the patches on her tummy are far less red and angry now. She has been a little indignant about all the visitors getting involved in pill-popping to get her anti-robe tablets down her over the last week but at least she is getting better.
Jasper and Dino are exhausted after having two weeks on non stop games and attention from James (16) and a weekend of attention from Hannah (6). The Housekeeper was woken up on Sunday morning to the shrill voice of a six year old saying "play with me Jasper, fetch the ball Jasper, come here Jasper. I'm playing with Dino now, Jasper. Stop licking me, Jasper" !!!!
Jasper, it has to be said, was incredibly good natured. Especially about being picked up and carried around like a rag doll. They both appear to be missing their house guest playmates and are now attention seeking BIG TIME with The Housekeepers.
The Housekeeper had a very successful show run for Beauty & the Beast and was gobsmacked to find Sir Tim Rice in the audience on the last night of the show. A truly magical end to a wonderful two weeks. She had a very lazy day yesterday looking after her aching bones from carrying around 18lbs of costume twice a day and is now catching up with work, ready for the week ahead.
So how are all of you doing?????

Green Eyed Monster
We have a jealous Jasper.
He has been getting very vocal and has been making a point of coming to The Housekeeper when she is cuddling one of the other cats and muscling his way into the cuddle.
This morning, The Housekeeper was standing in the kitchen, in her PJ's, making some tea and picked up Crystal for a morning snuggle whilst the kettle was boiling. Jasper wasn't happy and decided that he needed attention as well, or a cuddle. So he stood on his hind legs and reached up The Housekeeper's legs.
Result.

Blue Moon 2
It's been scientifically proved that Blue Moon's occur on approx the 15th of every alternate month.
The Housekeeper was woken up in the early hours of the morning by an Abyssinian, padding heavily on her chest. It was AMBER!!! After some whisker ticking cat kisses, head rubbing and even a bit of cat dribble, she actually started to rake the duvet to try and get into bed.
Amber cuddling up in bed is UNHEARD of. This has only ever happened once and she got out after about 5 minutes.
It has to be said, that if The Housekeepers had been woken up by either of the kittens wanting a cuddle and changing position 5 times in the course of a night, that they would have ended up on the floor or in their hammocks, however, when it comes to Amber and cuddles, you have to take them when you can get them.
So, The Housekeeper actually enjoyed a sleepless night of cuddles, head butts and purrs from the Sorrel one. She slept by The Housekeeper's side, on her chest and in a nest between The Housekeeper's chest and knees and kept The Housekeeper very warm.
Mr Housekeeper reckoned she was apologising for the chomped mobile phone charger !!! Who knows !!!

Crystal the Shed Cat
Crystal's second favourite place in her whole wide cat world (No 1 being under the duvet, curled up in Mr Housekeeper's arms) is the workshop where The Housekeeper works.
Originally she only used to visit the workshop in the arms of Mr Housekeeper when he came home early from work. However it's now become a bit of a routine. After breakfast Crystal sits at the conservatory door and waits to be taken to work by The Housekeeper.
Of course it didn't take long before, being an Abyssinian, Crystal had made it her own space. Its her sanctuary, away from the madness of the bouncing kittens. As the days got colder last November, The Housekeeper relented and even bought her a bed, just for the workshop. It's sat on top of a pile of flat pack boxes, at window height, from which she can survey the garden, watch the birds and keep an eye on the open back gate for the delivery men and any visitors.
And YES, it really WAS that sunny yesterday morning!
