Putting my foot in it

The day started peacefully enough with a cup of tea for The Housekeeper in bed whilst reading on the iPad and deciding on a plan of action for the day.

Meanwhile Dino and Jasper's Sunday morning started with a brotherly brawl and a bout of tearing round the house at break neck speed.

The Housekeeper's plan of action did NOT involve clearing up .....after the inevitable happened.

Dino chased Jasper off the bedroom window sill onto the bedside chest of drawers that The Housekeeper's mug of tea was sat on, two thirds drunk. Dino's front paw went straight in the lukewarm tea and the remainder went all over The Housekeeper, chest of drawers, carpet, and teddy bear on foot stall at side of bed.

End of lie in!

Payback Purrotest

The Housekeeper has been mopping up!

She doesn't know who is to blame for this misdemeanour, however in hindsight it's a miracle that it hasn't happened sooner.....

The source of the water which is now creeping across the conservatory floor, is the bubble tube which you can see in the corner of the room. It has an electric pump which blasts bubbles up through the tube through a film of different coloured lights giving an ambient effect in the room at dusk - or - IT DID!

The Housekeeper was very, very confused for a few minutes as to why there was SO much water everywhere, but the tube was still upright and hadn't been knocked over. It was only when she started mopping up and was moving things that she realised what had happened.

Someone has chewed holes in the plastic pipe which runs from the bubble tube to the pump.

With sarcastic THANKS to The Katnip Lounge who suggested in a comment yesterday, that the Four Abyssinians should stage a purrotest due to both Housekeeper's going AWOL over the last few days.

Clothes Airer Surfing 2

Jasper's been at it again. This time however it wasnt just for the sake of climbing the clothes airer, he was trying to reach the curly ribbon on the end of some helium balloons!

The Housekeeper wonders if Jasper will ever grow out of airer surfing and is resigned to having to buy a new clothes airer at some point as this one is now slightly bent due to a certain fawn Abyssinian's weight.
This is a four tier airer which is approx 6 foot high and Jasper was above head height in these pictures.

AND

Just to prove that The Housekeepers do use the camera for something other that cat photographs, here's a picture of the sky, looking up the road from the house last night!

Playing Up

The Housekeepers both went out last night to an evening wedding reception and left the Four Abyssinians home alone. They had obviously all been fast asleep most of the night as they were very bleary eyed when The Housekeeper put the key in the door at midnight.

The Housekeepers settled down to go to sleep and that's when the "FUN" started!

Crystal climbed into her usual spot by Mr Housekeeper and started to purr them both to sleep and Amber decided it was time for a cuddle and stood on The Housekeeper whilst she headbutted her and nuzzled.

Dino ran up and down the stairs. Sorry. No. Dino THUNDERED up and down the stairs and did circuits of the bedroom.

And Jasper!

Jasper pulled rubbish out of the bin.
Jasper started to chew the bottom of the Dry Cleaning bags containing The Housekeeper's posh frocks
Jasper stole the brushes from The Housekeeper's make up pouch and ran off down the stairs with them.
Jasper bounced on the bed

Mr Housekeeper managed to sleep through most of this after several beers at the wedding.
The Housekeeper got out of bed AGAIN! and Jasper got shut out of the bedroom!

This then meant that Dino wailed at the top of his cat voice at the door for it to be opened again and headbutted the door continuously so it rattled.

The Housekeeper needs more sleep!

Lofty Places

Jasper's been back in the loft again..... Mr Housekeeper left the ladder unattended and shortly afterwards cries of "get down", "get off the ladder", "no further" and "NO" were heard coming from the loft by The Housekeeper.

She went to help immediately.... that is immediately after she had picked the camera up, of course, as she failed to get pictures of Jasper's exploits up the loft ladder last time!!!

That tail isn't a happy cat tail at all.... is it!!!!!

It looks like his little adventure wore him out though!

How to De-Junk your Life

The Housekeeper remembers a television programme some years ago called How to De-Junk Your Life. Dealing with Clutter. How to De-Junk Your Home. It gave radical, but sensible ideas on how to gut a room, sort out the essential from the sentimental and to let go of the junk.

A dejunking expert is not required at The Housekeepers. She has four mini whirlwinds who are willing to indiscriminately select possessions of The Housekeeper's which they feel she should no longer have to dust.

The Housekeeper suspects that a fly may have been to blame for the mayhem which was caused at lunchtime today. She heard the crash - and knew it spelled trouble. It is, however, VERY worrying in hindsight that when faced with a room of broken glass, three absent felines and the fourth leaving the scene of the crime that the first thought was to where the camera was for evidence. The Housekeeper is pleased to report that there were no trails of blood to be seen and all sixteen paws were checked for signs of cuts as soon as the broken glass had been picked and hoovered up.

So: The bell tolls today for;

1) The large blue goblet vase which stood on the conservatory table. It was destroyed by a low flying empty wine bottle (which survived). Purchased for just £5 at a car boot sale on a warm sunny day, not unlike today by The Housekeeper, out on a mission with her mate Ian, when they were on the hunt for props for a show.

2) A goldfish bowl shaped lantern which took a candle or tea light.

3) A wrought iron stand with three mini glass goldfish bowls which took tea lights as well

4) A square lantern with painted glass

5) The rope light which used to be hidden in the internal conservatory guttering to reflect light onto the ceiling

Fortunately the glass top table in the conservatory survived. Just.

Smashing!

Sun Spot Chasing

Today the sun shone and it was unseasonally but beautifully warm. The bed's been changed and the pale lilac duvet cover is on the bed. It has silver embroidery in a panel across the top and tiny silver sequins sewn into the embroidery.

The Housekeeper's have a water bed, which of course moves when it is pounced on. Amber volunteered herself to jump on the bed, making it move, causing the sequins to reflect the sunlight and sun spots to dance all over the bedroom ceiling, walls, furniture and floor.

Hours of Abyssinian fun. Unfortunately sun spots don't photograph too well, but Sorrel Abyssinians do!

The Watch Pot

Something caught the eye of the Four Abyssinian's on Saturday morning. It kept the four furry friends and The Housekeeper transfixed for over THREE hours!

Everyone watched .....

and watched .....

Amber kept watch from the best vantage point whilst everyone else had a break .....

Jasper and Dino came back and took a closer look .....

Crystal came back to see if anything had changed .....

.... but on the basis that nothing had changed, she decided to show her tummy to the camera .....

Jasper tried a change of position too, whilst Crystal went back to watching .....

And they watched .....

 And they watched .....

 Crystal and Amber watched .....

 Jasper and Dino watched .....

And then when everyone else was bored, Amber took up sole responsibility - and watched .....

And then took over guard cat duty to stop any strangers from coming in to watch .....

The Housekeeper gave up what she was doing and settled down, lying on her front, to watch .....

Jasper gave up watching and and made himself a nest on the back of The Housekeeper's legs

(Note: It's not very easy to turn your arm, wrist and camera 180 degrees to take a picture of a cat who is sitting on the back of your own legs! Three pictures of the ceiling deleted!!!)

But eventually, after all that waiting, The Housekeeper spied a tiny copper coloured beetle, the size of an adults little fingernail, crawling through the stones !!!!
(He's in the middle, on the LHS of the pale stone)

Bubble Trouble

The Housekeeper has been a bit busy this week. A huge trunk of Aladdin costumes came back from hire recently and she decided to make the most of the good weather last Thursday and Friday doing 9 loads of washing. A friend came round today and they both spent the day mending seams, hems and re-elasticating in the conservatory. The four Abyssinians all lent a hand. Scissors, cotton bobbins and pin boxes are all VERY interesting to an Abyssinian, as is a sewing machine. Worryingly interesting!!!!!

Three of them managed to supervise whilst one helped by airer surfing on the remaining drying clothes, sitting in the crate of unchecked costumes and sitting in the trunk of finished ones. Thanks Jasper!

The Housekeeper suspects that Jasper may just also be responsible for the latest misdemeanour. She had a consignment of bubble wrap delivered on Friday and has yet to take the excess to her storage unit where the hire costumes are stored.

The result. Plastic wrapping everywhere .......

Yeee Haa! Arhhhhhh

Jasper's in trouble again ....

You know that blue check bag that was hanging on the back of the dining room door? Well, it had costume hats in it that had been returned from a hire - and The Housekeeper had put them out of cat reach in the bag.

However she didn't anticipate Jasper, the High Altitude Kitten. Having retrieved Jasper from the green and white plastic bag and from the top of the door, she assumed that all was well, until she came to take the bag to the storage unit and looked at the contents.

And Yes, It is definitely Jasper that's to blame, readers. The fur on the hat is fawn and the Crystal girl is just too laid back to contemplate such a misdemeanour. It's not so much The Cat in the Hat as The Cat who trashed the Hat. Remember the blog about Dino and the tricorn?!!!

Mr Housekeeper suggested that The Housekeeper should keep the hat and say that its a bullet hole in the crown ... Hmmmm

High Altitude Abyssinian

There are days in this life when, if you didn't see something happen with your own eyes, you wouldn't  believe they were possible. Or if someone told you that it had happened you'd think they'd just made it up for a good blog entry...

The Housekeeper was sat at the dining room table about 20 minutes ago working on the laptop and chatting on MSN when Jasper came up for a cuddle and a head butt. He then turned round and got climbed onto the back of the dining room chair to her left with all four paws in a row, nearest the open door and made a diagonal leap to the top of the dining room door.

The door currently has an "over door hanger" on it and hanging from it are several costumes waiting to be mended and a couple of returned hires which have been hung, in their bags, out of Abyssinian reach.

The Housekeeper's only thought process was whatever you do Jasper, don't try to get in the bags

So what happens?.....

Frosty Receptions

The Housekeeper decided to defrost the tall upright freezer in the outhouse yesterday evening, before the supermarket delivered her shopping.

She isn't sure which was funnier;

The look on the cats faces at her carrying the remainder of the frozen food up to the bath to keep cold, wrapped in towels.

The quizzical look on Jasper's face as he sat on top of the freezer, looking down over the front, with one paw on The Housekeeper's shoulder to "help".

The look on Jasper's face when he stood on his back paws and put his front paws on the icy shelf to look into the freezer.

or

The sight of Dino running up the length of the hallway, shaking himself,  having been inside the still defrosting freezer and having ice cold drips of water running down his back!!!!

Escaped Convicts

The Housekeeper had a big fright yesterday. A wide open conservatory door and all four cats outside.

Amber and Crystal know better than to go far and were stood on the patio outside the door and made a run back inside the house as soon as The Housekeeper spoke to them. Dino took a little more convincing and had to be followed and picked up and taken home.

And Jasper. Jasper was nowhere to be found. Not in the house. Not in the garden. He had decided to walk round the edge of the conservatory out of the side gate and was eyeing up the gap between the two garages.
Luckily a quiet upbeat word from The Housekeeper and he came scampering towards her and was picked up too.

Much relief.

But how did they get out?! The door does stick occasionally (you have to lift the handle up to lock the door, but The Housekeeper is absolutely convinced that the door was shut tight when she came in. And she still is, having now sat at the table and watched Dino leap at the door handle to try to repeat "his trick"

So now The Housekeeper will have to go through a routine of not only closing but locking the conservatory door every time she goes to the workshop.

To make matters worse - when The Housekeeper took the bags of post out of the workshop and went back to the house that afternoon, Amber put her paw into the open door and let Jasper run past her, between the post bags. The Housekeeper wasn't quite so lucky. It took a good 5 minutes to convince him to come out from behind the workshop.

Lesson of the Day - Jasper

Lofty Places

CAT:  I've found another room in the house which I didn't know about. It's very exciting. It must have been here all along but it's the first time I have been able to experience the room myself, albeit only for a few seconds until Mr Housekeeper panicked and saw me in the room.

He panicked even more when he realised that he couldn't get me out of the room on his own and The Housekeeper was on the phone downstairs. He didn't want to shout either in case it frightened me and I leapt, as he was holding me tightly in his arms because he didn't want me exploring the room on my own and getting "into things I shouldn't". He didn't like the idea of me getting something called rockwool insulation on my feet either. Dunno why. It sounded cosy to me.

HUMAN:  We are NEVER, EVER going to be able to leave the loft hatch open and unattended ever again.
Jasper can climb ladders as well as clothes airers!

Rehab

Thank you for all attending this session of Chompers Anonymouse. Who would like to be first to speak?

Three pairs of feline eyes and one pair of human ones fall on the older Sorrel one......

A: Hello. My name is Amber and I am an addict

Thank you Amber. Would you like to tell the group more?

A: Well. I ... have this compulsion. I ...just have to ..... eat Nokia mobile phone chargers......

Amber hangs head in shame

And when did this compulsion begin?

A: Apparently I've always liked chewing things. My nickname used to be Thuglet, until those two boys arrived. I'm definitely more delicate now but I just still like to chew. I've tried ipod headphones, but phone chargers are still my favourite.

When was your latest fix?

A: This morning. The Housekeeper came downstairs to make tea and as she turned on the computer, she noticed the copper wires protruding from the black coating. I'm not very clever at covering my tracks. I heard this cry of AM-BER from where I was skulking at the time.

What happened last night?

A: Well, they'd all done to bed. Crystal was cuddling under the duvet, the boys were in their hammocks and I was roaming. I was bored. I saw it on the table. I tried to resist, really I did. But all of a sudden there it was, in front of me, in two pieces, chomped.

At least I waited till the humans were out of sight. I chomped a pair of ipod headphones whilst actually sitting next to Mr Housekeeper on the settee. That DIDN'T go down well. Especially as they were a brand new replacement for another set that I'd chewed.

Do you know why you chomp cables?

A: It's not ALL cables. It's just Nokia phone chargers. The Housekeeper says maybe its because the copper wire in the middle is the same colour as me and looks good with my fur!

Amber blinks the wide eyed blink of a "trying to look innocent" Abyssinian Cat

So how do you feel today?

A: Embarrassed. The Housekeeper insisted on posting an entry that said "Amber 4 - Phone Chargers 0" on her "MyFaceSpaceBook page" to tell the whole world, asking if anyone had an old charger that she could have to replace the chomped one.

Someone brought one round too - Crystal was SUCH a tart, standing on her hind legs with Moppy in her mouth showing full tummy to the visitor - it was SO embarrassing

Think I might keep a low cat profile for a day or two.....

M.E.W.S

Moggy Emergency Warning System

5:18am - MEWS was activated. The Housekeeper was woken by Jasper, who was sandpapering her eyelids and chin. Dino was in full running & screaming like a banshee in Tarzan cry mode. Bizarrely, when his running propelled him onto the bed at two minute intervals, he was also purring like a tractor.

Had the sky fallen in? Had someone died? Had something been broken?

5:24am - The Housekeeper decided to ensure something terrible hadn't happened. Mr Housekeeper was in the shower. Crystal was washing noisily on the landing in full guard-cat mode, waiting for Mr Housekeeper to get out of the shower. Amber was downstairs in the lounge, snoozing. Nothing was broken.

5:28am - The Housekeeper found the cause of the chaos.

THE CRUNCHIE BOWL WAS EMPTY!

5:40am - Mr Housekeeper left for work. The Housekeeper buried her head under the duvet.

5:50am - The Housekeeper was still awake

5:55am - The Housekeeper was now VERY awake

6:00am - The Housekeeper gave up, got up and made tea.

The Nit Nurse

We have a nit nurse in the house. And true to form, after your head has been examined by the nit nurse, it itches. But this is no ordinary nit nurse. This is Crystal.

She only ever does it when she comes to the workshop with me to help me with the sales packing but if I am concentrating on writing and she wants my attention, she stands on her hind legs, full warm fuzzy cat belly in face (nice!) and then starts to comb through my hair with her claws.

She isn't scratching my scalp, but she is definitely using her claws and "raking" through my hair.

Its a good job no one can see into the workshop as I ended up with a nice hair boggle on the back of my head today after a good 2-3 minutes of nit inspection!

Carrot & Pineapple Muffins

  • Weigh into a large bowl flour, baking powder, bicarb, salt, cinnamon, brown sugar, grated carrot and crushed pineapple
  • REMOVE KITTEN FROM KITCHEN WORK SURFACE
  • Measure into a large mixing jug milk, corn oil and eggs
  • REMOVE KITTENS HEAD FROM FRIDGE DOOR BEFORE IT CLOSES
  • Mix the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients with liberal stirs and cries of DOWN, GET DOWN, I SAID GET DOWN and WHAT PART OF NO DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND.
  • Place paper cake cases into muffin pans
  • REMOVE KITTENS FROM KITCHEN WORK SURFACE
  • REPLACE THREE OF THE CAKE CASES WITH NEW UNCHEWED ONES
  • Divide the batter between the cake cases and place in the oven
  • MAKE TEA AND GIVE KITTENS THEIR DINNER
  • Remove muffin pans from oven when cooked and leave to cool on oven top
  • MOVE MUFFIN PANS BEFORE TINY PAWS AND TINY NOSES GET SCALDED BY INTERESTED KITTENS
  • Make cream cheese frosting with cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla essence
  • Cover half of the cakes with frosting (trying to be healthy)
  • Place in plastic containers when cold to keep airtight with the exception of the ones you were planning to eat for supper
  • Lick frosting bowl out with finger (human) and place in washing up bowl to stop the kittens helping to wash up

The Housekeeper wonders if it is possible to take tongue prints from cats and kittens (much like finger prints in humans) to ascertain just who tried the frosting on the one remaining cake with frosting that was left on the work surface ................No one is owning up ..........
